Save Our Summers Kentucky is a grass roots statewide
coalition of parents, students, and educators concerned about the
impact of early to mid-August start dates on our students, families,
schools and communities.
As the
importance of standardized tests has grown, the school start
dates have moved closer and closer to August 1. Many school
districts have even experimented with non-traditional school
calendars in hopes of raising test scores. |
|
Research clearly shows that the
school calendar configuration does not impact academic
performance, but does increase non-instructional costs and
thus, takes valuable tax dollars out of our classrooms and
away from our students and teachers.
Due to the high stakes testing
system, it is very difficult for local school districts to
simply start the year later. Each district wants to
schedule as many instructional days before the uniform
standardized test as possible. Wouldn't if be more fair for
the state to set a uniform school start date -- allowing all
school districts, regardless of economics, to offer the same
number of instructional days before the uniform, testing
date? |

Second, by networking across the state, we will spread our message
to other parents who can then write their congressman.
We need everyone to

Other states have succeeded, but
only through mass numbers of parents contacting their legislators to
